Проведение дискуссии
Teacher: Good-morning pupils. I’m very glad to see you. Today our lesson
will have a form of a discussion on topic “Russian teenagers: yesterday, today,
tomorrow”.
But first of all, I would like to introduce our jury. They will give every team
from 1 to 5 points in each round. And then we will determine the winner.
I hope everybody is ready and it’s time to start our debates.
The first round
Teacher: It is said that the most beautiful period of our life is when we are
teenagers. At this age we start a new adult life. We get more and more freedom. We
can go to parties, cafes, etc. We can have a lot of fun with our friends. But of
course in different periods teenagers spend their free time in different ways. Now
let’s compare three generations: the generation of the 20
th
century, the generation of
the 21
st
century and the generation of the future times.
Every team will have 4 minutes to speak. And we will start with the
presentation of the 1
st
team “Russian teenagers of the 20
th
century”.
1
st
team: We think it is great to be teenagers, but sometimes our parents don’t
understand us. They often compare their childhood and youth with the present, and
regard old times as better ones, always talking about “the good old days”. And we
agree with them.
Teenagers in the 20
th
century spent a lot of their free time with their friends.
They often went to the cinema and theatre. Movies told about ordinary people’s
lives and such ploys were very interesting for everyone.
Teens rode bikes, they didn’t have cars and they took part in different sports
competitions so all that helped them to be healthier than teens nowadays are.
In summer teenagers were very glad to go to a camp and they liked to help
people in need. They didn’t know anything about computers, the Internet, different
devices such as iPhones, for example. That’s why teens did their homework
themselves, they had to go to the library, spending hours looking through books
and magazines and really reading articles. So teenagers of the 20
th
century were
very patient, intelligent, sociable.
They appreciated every moment. They had fun sitting near the fire and
singing songs or playing the guitar and dancing.
In the 20
th
century teenagers were more responsible. Besides, they were not
influenced by TV, advertising and so on. They didn’t need to take alcohol or even
drugs to have fun.
In conclusion, we would like to name the main advantages of teenagers in
the last century:
-
Patience;
-
Responsibility;
-
Sociability;
-
Kindness;
-
Ability to appreciate every moment;
-
Respect for parents and other adults.
Teacher: Well done! Thank you for your presentation and now let’s listen to
the 2
nd
team “Russian teenagers of the 21
st
century”.
2
nd
team: We would like to introduce you our generation – the generation of
the 21
st
century.
The 21
st
century
is
very
nice,
very
new
and
gives
teenagers
a
lot
of
opportunities.
In modern world there is a variety of activities which can be used by teens in
their free time. For example different sport and dancing clubs, every school has
many study and hobby groups where teenagers can show their abilities.
Of course, everyone knows that in the 21
st
century children spend much time
with the computer, use the Internet very often, but they do not just play games,
such devices help in their studies, they don’t need to spend much time looking for
a book in the library or waste money to buy it because they can easily find it in the
Internet and read it when and where they want.
Nowadays teenagers like to go to the cinema and movies are more exciting
than those of the last century. There are different kinds of films and of cinemas too,
for example, 3D cinema, 4D and even 5D cinema. They attract millions of young
people every year.
Many Russian teenagers of our century spend their time on education. They
enter the institutes and universities to get higher education and try to do everything
for it.
Teenagers of the 21
st
century spend their free time funnier than before,
because they have possibilities to take part in different concerts, parties and
international competitions. Today children can travel abroad on their holidays, for
example, without any difficulties.
So we may say that teens in the 21
st
century have a great number of ways to
spend their free time and have fun. Our society tries to do everything for young
people and they have already become more self - independent, well-educated, and
they use all their abilities to make success.
Teacher: Nice! Thank you, the 2
nd
team. And now let’s look at the 3
rd
team
“Russian teenagers in future”.
3
rd
team: The world changes very quickly together with the people’s lives
and it’s inevitable. So we have learnt some articles, sites and scientists’ opinions
and now would like to present you the future generation of teenagers.
Teenagers will be very self-independent and clever because of the variety of
education programs. With the help of different high-tech devices teens will be able
to study at home and there will be no need to go to school every day. That’s why
young people will have more free time for their families and friends.
In future teenagers will go to the cinema with pleasure, as in previous
centuries, but cinemas will change. There will be no even 5D movies, people will
come to the cinema, choose a film and a role in it so they will be actors and
actresses as real ones.
Girls, for example, will be very fond of shopping. Of course you may say
that it has been always so, but the process of shopping will be easier than before. It
will be enough to come to a shop, stand on a special computer which will present
you all things in the shop and you will just push the button to look at yourself in
chosen clothes.
The male part of the future generation will also pay much attention to their
appearance, but most of all to their physical conditions. Boys will go in for sports
and spend a lot of time on their trainings.
Teenagers of the next century will have the same rights as adults, so they
will be able to spend their free time working and earning money for helping their
parents.
Teacher: Well, thank you very much. And now let’s know your opinions
about the presentations of each group.
I ask our jury to express their opinions too and announce the results.
Second round
Teacher: It’s time for questions. Every team should ask each of its opponents
2 questions and should get 3 questions from jury. All questions must be connected
with the topic presented by each team.
Every question and answer will be estimated by our jury. Don’t forget about
grammar rules, try not to do any mistakes.
Third round
Teacher: We know the results after two rounds and now let’s start the third
one.
We have already discussed a lot of advantages and positive features of being
a teenager in different centuries, but now let’s speak more about their problems.
Each group will receive 2 letters from teens with their problems. The task is
to discuss the letters with your team and to give some advice or to find some
solution. You have 2 minutes to prepare and don’t forget that your opponents can
ask you some questions.
As usual our jury will give each group from 1 to 5 points.
Let’s begin.
Letter 1.
I live in a very large family. I have two brothers and three sisters and I’m the
youngest. Of course I love all of them, but my parents pay more attention to them,
to their appearance and problems. My mother thinks that I’m too young to worry
about my clothes and shoes, that’s why I have to wear everything after my sisters.
I’m very upset because of this and besides, my classmates begin to laugh at me. I
understand our family is not rich, but I hope there should be some way out. May be
you can help me?
(Kate, 14)
Letter 2.
I’m sure you will not be surprised when I tell you that my problem is
connected with school. But it’s not my marks or relationship with teachers, my
problem is potatoes harvest trips to our collective farm. I really hate them. I can’t
understand why we must do it. My parents always say that it is our duty, but I don’t
think so. Last time I didn’t go and was punished not only at school but at home too.
I don’t know what to do. Please, help me.
(Mike, 13)
Letter 3.
I’m very worried because the lessons at school are too difficult for me.
Everything would be OK if we didn’t have marks (poor marks), tests and reports
all the time. I don’t like to do my homework. In my opinion homework is a waste
of time. We have exams soon, and I know I’m going to fail them. My parents will
be furious. Please, help.
(Olga, 15)
Letter 4.
My problem is with my Mum. She thinks I spend too much time in front of
my computer. And at the same time she wants that I do my best to get good marks
on
every
subject.
She
can’t
understand
that
I
need
computer
not
only
for
entertainment but also for my study. Every day we dispute with her about it and I
don’t know what to do. I need your help.
(Ivan, 14)
Letter 5.
We live in a highly developed society and nowadays teenagers can work as
adults if they want. I have found a very good job, but it occupies the most part of
my day. That’s why I have no chance to be good at my study. I love my job, I don’t
want to lose it and I prefer to earn money than to study, but all my friends and
relatives are worried about my future. They are sure that I should develop. Of
course I don’t share their worries. I’m satisfied with my life, but maybe there is
some sense in their words.
(Max, 16)
Letter 6.
There are so many devices in modern times. All of them have different
functions and spheres of usage. Most of teenagers and even adults can’t imagine
their life without this equipment. And it’s my main problem. I don’t understand
anything in technique and spend a lot of time to know how it works. Besides, I
have poor eyesight and it becomes worse and worse because of regular usage of
these devices. So I’m in a difficult situation, all of this equipment is necessary for
my studies and life, but it is dangerous for my health. Can you advice me
something?
(Margaret, 14)
Teacher: So now we have the winner. My congratulations! All of you
worked very good and with the enthusiasm. I’m really satisfied, thank you!
Let’s know the impression of the members of our jury. What do you think
about groups’ work, their speeches and presentations?
And what conclusions may we make?
We have noticed that every generation of teenagers has its own advantages
and disadvantages. We can’t say what generation is the best, but we can compare
them. And you have done it with great success.
Now I ask you to comment on your mistakes.
Your marks for the discussion are the following…Thank you very much for
your work!
