1. Greetings:
T: Hello, boys and girls! I am glad to see you. You may take you seats.
The theme of our lesson is: «What a wonderful world", today we are going to speak how to save
the beauty of the world by incorporating current environmental issues, both local to you and
global. We shall discuss what is happening in the world, both the good news and the bad.
Concept: map:
T: And first, I would like you to tell me all the worlds and expressions associated with
«Natural world".
- plant and animal life
- keeping fit
- town and country
- pollution
- man ( man the destroyer, man the creator)
- deforestation
- ultraviolet radiation
- growth of population
- water conflict
- destruction of wildlife … etc.
2.
Video
T: Now I would like you to look how beautiful the world could be, if everyone takes care about it.
Training exercises (are presented on the interactive board).
3.
Discussing the problem of ecology:
Questions:
1
What does the world "environment" mean?
2
Do you think our planet needs protection?
3
What are the most serious environmental problems?
1
What do you know about a "greenhouse effect"?
How can it influence the climate of the planet in future?
4
Why are forests on the planet disappearing fast?
5
Do you think the Earth will become warmer? Why?
2
What do you feel about the problem of extinct and rare plants and animals?
( Kyrgyzstan)
6
What is done in the world to save our planet from an ecological disaster?
7
Do you think ecological problems should be discussed in the class? Why?
4. A role- playing activity
T: Now it’s time to role- play. Pretend that" Greenpeace" gives to Kyrgyzstan 100.000 $ pollution
grant, but hasn't decided what the most serious environmental problems in Kyrgyzstan are.
You will work with the problem of air pollution, water pollution, and destruction of wild life.
The task for you is to make a presentation of each group and prove that your problem is the
most serious and needs immediately financial input.
One group will make a presentation; other groups will work with a dialogue. You should put
the sentences in the correct order and do some tasks to the dialogue.
1 group «Friends of the planet»
Topic: Air pollution
1 student: Presentation:
We decided to join this group because people have lived on our planet for many years and depend
on their planet, on the sun, on animals and plants around them. The name of our group is
«Friends of the planet» Our motto is : We shall survive if we protect the nature together.
We are going to speak about air pollution.
2 student: The problems are:
-
polluted air mix with the rain and damage buildings
- People told not to be in direct sunlight because ultraviolet radiation from the sun can cause
skin cancer.
-
large amount of carbon dioxide can be dangerous for people and animals
-
holes in the ozone layer can't protect us from radiation
-
Nuclear power stations can go wrong and cause nuclear pollution.
3 student: The causes are:
-
the pollution in big cities comes from cars and buses
-
there are huge number of fires in the forests, also people burn leaves, garbage, etc. factories
and plants produce much smoke in the air
-
Nuclear power stations pollute air with poison elements.
4 student: Solutions are:
-
to make air clean again we need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants,
and also in cars and buses.
-
to prevent deforestation we need to plant more trees, cause trees help to control the world's
weather and to produce much of the oxygen in the air, and medicines from different illnesses
old ones like cancer and new ones like AIDS, may be discovered in wild plants in savannas,
deserts and rainforests.
2 group «Water defenders» Topic:
Water pollution
1 student: Presentation:
We decided to join this group because nowadays we understand how important it is to solve the
environmental problems that endanger people's lives. The most serious environmental problem in
our opinion is water pollution. The name of our group is «Water defenders». Our motto is:
We must protect our water. Water is our life.
2 student: The problems are:
-
there is no ocean or sea which is not used as a dump.
-
The Pacific Ocean, especially, has suffered from nuclear pollution
-
shortage of water, waste of water
-
many seas are used for dumping industrial and nuclear waste. Poison kills fish and sea
animals. Nuclear poisoned fish can be eaten by people
-
many rivers and lakes are poisoned too. Fish and reptiles can't live in them
-
there is not enough oxygen in the water. In such places all the birds leave their habitats and
many plants die. If people drink this water they can die too.
If we want to survive we must solve these problems quickly.
3 student: The causes are:
-
it happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers. So
they poison the water.
-
Factories use clean water. After the water is used if becomes poison which goes back into
rivers, lakes and seas.
-
The Pacific Ocean has suffered from nuclear pollution because the French Government
tests nuclear weapons there.
4 student: Solutions are:
-
to make water clean again we need good filters at factories and plants
-
ask the Government to make laws to protect air, water and soil
-
develop international cooperation to solve ecological problems together
save water and other natural resources
-
don't waste water
-
don't put poisons into the water
-
don't dump or pour industrial waste into rivers, seas and oceans
3 group: «Green peace»
Topic: Destruction of wildlife
1
student: Presentation:
- We must protect wildlife because forests, especially rainforests control world's weather, plants
produce much of the oxygen in the air which people need for breathing.
2
student: Problems are:
-
destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty
-
shortage of natural resources (metal, fuel, etc)
-
a lot of species of plants and animals are disappearing fast and can become extinct very soon
-
it may sound funny to you, but man needs protection and care as much as animals do. In the
places where people drink poisoned water, eat bad food and breathe polluted air they suffer
from serious diseases and die early, their children are born weak.
3
student: Causes are:
-
some picnickers finish their picnic with rubbish on the ground or they leave fire...
-
destruction of forests for making furniture, cardboard, paper.. .etc.
-
The modern way of life when people have little physical activity, use cars instead walking,
watch TV for many hours and work much on the computers.
4
student: Solutions are:
- take care of animals
- save gas, energy and other natural resources
-
keep your towns, cities and countryside clean don't
turn the planet into a pile of rubbish
-
people's habitats- their homes, towns and cities- must be kept ecologically clean
-
have more physical activity
Man is beginning to understand that his environment is not just his own town or country, but the
whole earth.
T: We shall send your programs to "Green peace" and will wait for their answer.
5. Listening comprehension.
Pre- listening task:
T: We are much more aware now of need to look after our environment.
What stories about the environment are in news at the moment?
Listening for information
T: Did you put sentences in the correct order? Let's check. You will hear an interview with John
Baines, an educational consultant who writes books about the environment. (See appendix № 3)
-
In your Headway textbooks you will find pictures to this dialogue on page 68. Listen and put a
tick next to the things in the pictures that he talks about.
- also, you should complete the sentences in your handouts (see appendix 1).
- and make a lists of things from the dialogue we should do and things we shouldn't do if we want
to protect the planet.
Comprehension check
1. T: What are some of the things he talks about that are not in the pictures?
Answers: using public transport, using unleaded petrol, saving cans and paper, looking after
animals, becoming a vegetarian
2. T: What are some of the things he does more of and some of the things he does less of?
Answers: More- uses his bike, walks, uses public transport, and saves things to be recycled
Less- uses his car less, doesn't throw as many things away
3.
T: You had a task to complete the sentences in your handouts. Let’s check:
Complete the following sentences:
a.
John uses his bicycle more because___________________________
b.
He's going to try to use less petrol by__________________________
c.
He uses unleaded petrol because______________________________
d.
When the bags in his kitchen are full___________________________
e.
He's a vegetarian because____________________________________
f.
John thinks that if we don't look after ________________________
T: Let's look at your lists of things from the dialogue we should do and things we
shouldn’t do if we want to protect the planet.
Answers:
We should do....
We shouldn't do
We should use less energy- petrol,
electricity, gas
We should use public transport
We should use renewable energy such
as
solar power and wind power
We should recycle our waste
We should look after the countryside
and
the animals
We shouldn't pollute the atmosphere or
the land or the sea .
We shouldn't consume so much
We shouldn't cut down the tropical
rainforests
We shouldn't use so many chemicals on
the land and in our food.
(See appendix №1)
Role- playing
6. Writing
T: We are carbon based life forms in more way than one. Our use of fossil fuels leads to the
emission of carbon dioxide, a key contributor of global climate change. I would like you
to work on your computers and calculate your carbon dioxide emissions per year.
Carbon C02 lifestyle calculator.
Use the form below to estimate your contribution to climate change. Select those options that
most closely reflect your lifestyle.
1.
I travel mostly by
- car
- bus\ train walking\
- cycling motorbike
2.
I like my home to be
- warm
- hot
- cool
3.
My heating bills are relatively
- normal for the size of home
- high
- normal
4.
I buy my electricity from.......sources
- non- renewable
- renewable
and.....energy
- do not conserve
- conserve
5.
I tend to eat.......food
a mix or fresh convenience
mostly fresh, locally grown
-

average
amount of household waste most of which is
-
not recycled
-
recycled
Result: your carbon dioxide emissions are estimated at 7374 kg per year
T: You see, it's a huge number!
- Can you prevent it? How could you become more «green»? What have you done to be friendlier
to the environment?
7. Conclusion
T: If all of us do what you told today, we'll have a really wonderful world like in an old song by
Louis Armstrong. I would like you to listen to this song and say what is beautiful in the world for
him and for you.
The song «What a wonderful world» by Louis Armstrong. (See appendix № 2)
8. Homework
T: Your homework is doing Venn diagram «The ways of solving ecological problems». The lesson
is over. Thank you very much. Good bye!

Appendix № 3
Dialogue: “How 'green' are you?”
I = Interviewer J = John Baines
I: John. I know that you're interested in all things to do with environment and the need to protect.
J: Right.
I: Can you tell me some of the things you've changed in your lifestyle to become a 'green' person?
J: Oh, yes. I could erm ... I could think of one or two things that I've tried to do over the last
couple of year .I think it's a couple of years since I got my bicycle out of the garage and repaired
it, and now I use it as much as possible . I use my car less. I try to do ten per cent fewer miles
every year, so last year I drove eleven thousand miles, and this year I'm going to try to do only ten
thousand.
I: So does this mean you travel less?
J: This doesn't means I travel less, this means I walk more often . When I do my shopping, I
always walk now. I use public transport when I can, usually going by train. I I'm sure your car
runs on unleaded petrol.
J: Yes it does. It's cheaper, and it keeps the air cleaner.
I: So that's transport. What about in the home? What's different in the kitchen?
J: Well, I save as much as I can. I don't throw it away. I have different bags for different things.
One bag has all the cans going into it, from the cat food to the beer. The second bag has all the
papers going into it, and the third bag has bottles, from olive oil bottles to wine bottles to
lemonade bottles. But the milk bottles still go on the doorstep so that they can be re-used.
I: And what do you do with these bags?
J: I take them to a place where they could be recycled. There's a place in a village where you can
take them. I and have you changed any of the things you buy?
J: Yes. I get washing up liquid and washing powder that doesn't harm the environmental...
I: But does this get your clothes as white?
J: I don't think my washing was ever ... very white, actually. No, it's fine.
I: We were talking about food. I know you've become a vegetarian, is this part of being 'green', or
something totally different?
J: Erm ... yes and no. Looking after animals, I think, is as important as looking after the
environment. I mean, they're part of it. So I prefer not to kill animals to eat them. Animals eat
food that peoples could eat. But if people want to eat meat, that's their decision.
I: Mm, I think it's true that people all over the world are becoming more aware of the need to look
after the planet. If we don't look after it, what will happen ... do you think?
J: If we don't become friendlier to the environment, then the environment will make it more
difficult for us, so that our life will not be as comfortable. I think we'll survive...
I: Oh, good!
J: ... but these are very important times.
