Good morning to all! Welcome to our mystery lesson.
In our last lesson you were divided into five groups. Have a look at the board. (На
Group A “Academics”: Natasha-1, Natalia-2, Svetlana-3, Marat-4; pgs. 3-25
Group B “Brilliant”: Gulya-1, Sergei-2, Nastya-3, Shasha-4; pgs. 26-49

Group E “Excellent”: Dasha-1, Marina-2, Julia-3, Arsen-4; pgs. 96-117
I .Now you must divide into new groups and sit together according to your
numbers.
Natasha, stay where you are, and all ones sit with her, all twos sit with Sergei, all
threes sit with Timur, and all fours sit with Inesa. Now you have 4 new teams.
Have a look at the board.(Taблица новых команд на доске) And now your task
is to retell what you have read. (Jigsaw activity)
But first, in order to play “Taboo,” you must pick a captain of your team. The
captain of the first team, come here. You must explain the word on your card,
without using taboo words, and the members of your team must guess this word.
(Key word and taboo words are on the cards)
Card 1:
Churchyard
Taboo words: Grave, dead people, coffins, and church.
Card 2:
Nightmare
Taboo words: Bad dream, night fright
Card 3:

Card 4:

Well done! Your scores are on the board.
II. Now begin to work amongst yourselves in your groups. Each member of your
group must retell his or her part of the novel and then you must put the novel
content together. (Jigsaw activity)
I see that you are all ready.
III. Now, you must answer these questions. (Inquiry- based reflection)
1.
Why does Jonathan Harker go to Transylvania?
2.
What happens when Jonathan is shaving?
3.
What does Jonathan find in the chapel? Do you think he was brave to go
there?
4.
Why is Mina so worried about Jonathan and Lucy?
5.
Why do you think Lucy is getting weaker and paler every day?
6.
How does Dr. Van Helsing try to convince Dr. Steward that Lucy is a
vampire? Does he succeed?
7.
Why is it a problem that there are only twenty nine boxes left in Carfax?
8.
How does the Count escape from the men in the house in Piccadilly?
What does he take with him?
9.
Why is Mina safe from the three vampire women?
10. What happens to the Count’s body at the end? What happens to Quincy
Morris?
Have a look at the board. The third team is winning at the moment.

Now, look at your scores again. The third and fourth teams have the same scores.
Let’s give them a hand.
V. And now it’s time for your last task. Do you agree, disagree, or you don’t know?
All teams come here and I will read you the following statements about the story,
and each team must stand at the table according to its opinions.
A. One of the reasons the Count invited Jonathan to Transylvania was to improve
his own English.
B. The reason why Jonathan thought there were no servants in the castle is that
they were so quiet.
C. The Whitby S.P.C.A. was right in thinking that the poor dog that jumped off the
Demeter was frightened by the storm.
D. Mina pinched Lucy’s throat and made the two red marks when she was trying
to get her home from the churchyard.
E. Dr Van Helsing and the other men gave Lucy blood four times before she died.
F. Dr Van Helsing removed Lucy’s body from the tomb himself in order to
convince Dr Seward that she was a vampire.
G. The Count needed Renfield to invite him inside the mental hospital so he could
get to Mina.
H. Mina wanted to go with the men to Varna because she was afraid she might
have to hurt them if they didn’t take her.
We are almost finished with our lesson for today. You all were good students, you
were very active. However, today’s winner is team three.
Now, I’d like to hear your opinions and feelings about today’s lesson.

Today’s lesson like a …

Happy to Do it!
Some are happy to do it, some don’t like doing it at all, some can do it, and some
can’t just yet. Some find it easy and some struggle with it. What is it? Writing! We
can juggle all of the above abilities, opinions and needs to motivate and captivate
our students so that they develop a love of writing that they have with them for
the rest of their life.
Today’s writing assignment

or
Have you got a pet? If not, would you like one?
